God: al-Malik (The King)

Description:  Our belief that God is King increases our desire to turn to Him & seek the bounty of the true Owner of all things. God is referred to as "King" five times in the Quran. "He is Allah (God), besides Whom there is no god; the King…" (Quran 59:23) "So exalted be Allah (God), the True King!" (Quran 20:114) "…the King of humanity, the God of humanity." (Quran 114:2) "Lo! the righteous will dwell among gardens and rivers, in the seat of honor with a Mighty King." (Quran 54:54-55) In Arabic, the word for "owner" ( mālik ) is closely related to the word "king" ( malik ), the only difference being that "owner" is pronounced with an added stress on the letter a.  God is referred to by this related name "Owner" in other verses, including: "Owner of Judgment Day." (Quran 1:4) (Indeed, in some modes of reciting the Qur’an, the word is pronounced with an unstressed a...

God: al-Zahir and al-Batin (The Manifest and The Hidden)

Description:  God’s existence is certainly manifest to our minds, but He is the Hidden when it comes to the true nature of His essence and attributes. God says:  "He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is the Knower of all things."  (Quran 57:3) Prophet Muhammad, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, said, addressing God in supplication: O God, Lord of the heavens, the Earth, and the Mighty Throne! Our Lord and the Lord of all things; who splits the seed and the kernel, who sent down the Torah, the Gospel, and the Criterion (Quran). I seek refuge with You from the evil in everything, all of which you grasp by the forelock. O God! You are the First, so nothing precedes You. You are the Last, so nothing comes after You. You are the Manifest, so nothing comes above You. You are the Hidden, so nothing comes below you. Fulfill our debts for us and enrich us so we will not be poor. [1] God is the Manifest God is the Manifest...

God is al-Mujeeb – The Answerer of Prayers

Description:  An explanation of one of the beautiful name of God, al-Mujeeb, which instills hope in us and comforts us and makes us realize that we are not alone.  This name of God is found in the following verse of the Quran:  "Ask forgiveness of Him, and turn to Him (in repentance): for my Lord is Near, the Answerer (of prayers)."  (Quran 11:61) God answers the prayers of those who beseech Him. He relieves those who seek refuge in Him and He placates their fears. He even answers the prayers of the unbelievers and those who are heedless when, in the throes of despair, they call out to Him: He it is Who enables you travel by land and sea; yet when you are in the ships, and they sail on with them in a pleasant breeze, and those (on the ship) rejoice, a violent wind overtakes them and the billows surge in on them from all sides, and they become certain that they are encompassed about, they pray to God, being sincere to Him in obedience, saying: "If You delive...

Chapter 112: One Third of the Quran

Description:  An interpretation of chapter 112 which revolve around the concept of God in Islam. 1.  Say: “He is Allah, the Unique.” 2.  “Allah, the Self-Sufficient.” 3.  “He does not give birth, nor was He born.” 4.  “And there is none equal to Him.” (1)  Say: “He is Allah, the Unique.”  This verse represents Allah’s own affirmation of His unique Monotheism, His inimitable Oneness.  Thus, the first verse is a command to the Prophet, may the mercy and blessings of God be upon him, and whoever reads or recites this verse to affirm Allah’s Unique Oneness.  He is one like whom there is no other.  There are many unities in this world, but they all are not unique as each unity has others similar to them.  For example, there is one Mount Everest, but there are other tall mountains similar to it.  In the case of Allah, there is no other unity similar to Him.  All other unities can be divided into parts, while Allah is...

Does God Reside Within His Creation?

Description:  This article briefly discusses and refutes the idea that God is physically and literally present within nature, and proves that His Supremacy above His creation is what conceptually suits Him.   God Almighty is distinct from His creation; nothing of Him resides in it, [1] nor is there any of His creation in Him. This motif has been reiterated by all Muslims theologians to confirm that there is no place pan - "all" + Greek  theos  "god")  [2] .  This concept underlies almost all famous world religions and mythologies.  It simply makes the creation, or part of it, a manifestation of God.  Anthropomorphic theologies - those that give human attributes to God - adopt pantheism as their bedrock belief.  Hindu Lord Krishna is quoted to say: in Islam for belief in God being inherent in His own creation,  a concept known as God’s omnipresence, ubiquity, or pantheism (from        ...

Facets of God’s Generosity

Description:  In this article the author draws our attention to some of the ways we can realize the generosity of God. God says: "O human being! What has beguiled you from your generous Lord, who created you, then fashioned, then proportioned you? In whatever form He pleased He constituted you." (Quran 82:6-8) The question in this verse is rhetorical.  Its sense is: "Should you not thank God and extol His praises for these blessings?" Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) said about God’s great favor upon him: "This is of the grace of my Lord that He may try me whether I am grateful or ungrateful; and whoever is grateful, he is grateful only for his own soul, and whoever is ungrateful, then surely my Lord is Self-Sufficient, Generous." (Quran 27:40) God’s name al-Karīm Karim has numerous connotations, among which are the following: 1.  One Who is Giving and Munificent Bountiful In the same way, a human being is described as generous if he or ...

Our Small Place in God’s Creation

Description:  The awe-inspiring creation of God humbles us and compels us to recognize Him and Praise Him.   People sometimes fancy themselves as being all-important, looking disdainfully from side to side, holding their noses high in the air.  But if they would only regard these great and awe-inspiring creations around them, it would give them a sense of humility and they would become humble before their Lord.  Things to Consider 1.    At the time of conception, between five and six hundred million sperm cells pass through the vaginal tract, each of them capable of fertilizing the egg and becoming a human being.  But God in His wisdom selects one from all of those millions to fertilize the egg, and this one will develop into the fully-formed human being God chooses to create, a being that by God’s grace possesses the capacity to reason and to dispose of its affairs.       This is how we were all created,...

God: Abba or Rabb?

Description:  Christians view the Muslim God as distance, unapproachable, and impersonal.  The article compares the Christian Name of God,  Abba  to one of the most frequently used Name of God in the Quran,  Rabb , extracting their meaning and usage. Abba  of the Bible Christians refer to God as Father in their creeds, prayers, and liturgy.  God, the Father, is Abba  is said to be the transliteration of the Aramaic word for father.  It is always used as a direct address to God the Father.  It appears three times in the entire NT and only once in a gospel.  In Mark 14:36 (" Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee" ).  The other two occurrences are in the letters of Paul, in Rom 8:15 and Gal 4:6. seen as one of the three persons of Trinity.  They believe that the Father has a Son, Jesus.  Christians think they alone have a personal relationship, both with the Father and the Son.   A great debat...
